## How to Relight a Honeywell Water Heater
Materials You’ll Need:
– Long-neck lighter or matches
– Owner’s manual (if available)
Safety Precautions:
– Ensure the gas supply to the water heater is turned off.
– Wait at least 5 minutes for the gas to dissipate before relighting.
– Do not attempt to relight the water heater if you smell gas.
– Keep children and pets away from the water heater during the process.
Step 1: Locate the Gas Valve
– Refer to the owner’s manual or look beneath the water heater’s access panel.
– Identify the gas valve that controls the fuel supply.
Step 2: Turn Off the Gas Valve
– Rotate the gas valve lever to the “Off” position. This will stop the flow of gas to the burner assembly.
Step 3: Wait for Gas Dissipation
– Allow at least 5 minutes for any residual gas to dissipate from the lines. This is crucial to prevent an explosion or fire.
Step 4: Turn On the Cold Water Supply
– Locate the cold water inlet pipe on the water heater.
– Open the cold water faucet connected to the inlet pipe. This will fill the water heater tank and ensure water is flowing through the system.
Step 5: Locate the Pilot Light Assembly
– Open the access panel on the front or side of the water heater.
– Locate the pilot light assembly, which typically consists of a small flame burning continuously.
Step 6: Light the Pilot Light
– Use a long-neck lighter or matches to ignite the pilot light.
– Hold the lighter or match near the pilot light opening and press the ignition button.
– If the pilot light doesn’t ignite immediately, try again after a few seconds.
Step 7: Depress the Reset Button
– Once the pilot light is lit, hold down the reset button located near the gas valve.
– Keep the reset button depressed for about 30 seconds. This will allow the thermocouple to heat up and open the gas valve.
Step 8: Release the Reset Button
– After 30 seconds, release the reset button.
– The pilot light should remain lit, and the burner assembly should ignite.
Step 9: Check for Proper Operation
– Listen for the sound of the burner igniting.
– Confirm that the water heater is heating water by turning on a hot water faucet.
Step 10: Close the Access Panel
– Close the access panel on the water heater.
– Turn off the cold water faucet that was opened earlier.
Step 11: Turn On the Gas Valve
– Return to the gas valve and turn the lever to the “On” position. This will resume the flow of gas to the burner assembly.
Troubleshooting Tips:
– Pilot light won’t light: Ensure that the gas supply is turned on and that there is no debris blocking the pilot light opening.
– Pilot light stays lit but the burner won’t ignite: Check the thermocouple, which is a small metal rod near the pilot light. If the thermocouple is damaged or faulty, it may need to be replaced.
– Pilot light goes out after a few seconds: This could indicate a faulty thermocouple, a clogged burner orifice, or a problem with the gas valve.
– Water heater is not heating water: Ensure that the temperature dial is set correctly and that the burner is igniting properly. Check for any leaks or blockages in the water lines.
Caution:
If you encounter any difficulties or suspect a more serious problem, refer to the owner’s manual or contact a qualified plumber. Attempting to repair a water heater without proper knowledge or experience can be dangerous.
