## Water Heater Operation During Power Outages
### Electric Water Heaters
Electric water heaters rely on electricity to heat water. During a power outage, these heaters will not be able to function.
### Gas Water Heaters
Gas water heaters, on the other hand, can still operate during a power outage. These heaters use a standing pilot light to ignite the gas flame when needed. The only exception to this is if the gas supply is also interrupted during the outage.
### Water Heater Backup Systems
There are a few different backup systems that can be used to ensure that you have hot water during a power outage, regardless of the type of water heater you have.
Generator: A generator can be used to provide power to your electric water heater or other appliances during an outage.
Solar Thermal System: A solar thermal system can be used to heat water using the sun’s energy. This system can be used to provide hot water even during a power outage.
Heat Pump Water Heater: A heat pump water heater uses a compressor to transfer heat from the surrounding air to the water in the tank. This system can be used to provide hot water even during a power outage, as long as the compressor is not damaged.
Wood-Fired Water Heater: A wood-fired water heater can be used to provide hot water during a power outage. These heaters are typically used in rural areas where there is no access to electricity or gas.
### Steps to Prepare for a Power Outage
Before a power outage:
Check the batteries in your flashlight and portable radio.
Fill a bathtub or sink with water for drinking and cooking.
Turn off your electric water heater to prevent it from overheating.
If you have a gas water heater, make sure that the pilot light is lit.
If you have a generator, make sure that it is in good working order and that you have enough fuel.
During a power outage:
If you have an electric water heater, you will need to use a backup system to get hot water.
If you have a gas water heater, you will need to make sure that the pilot light is lit.
If you do not have a backup system, you can boil water on your stove or over a campfire.
Be careful not to leave candles or other open flames unattended.
After a power outage:
Once power has been restored, turn your electric water heater back on.
If you have a gas water heater, make sure that the pilot light is lit.
Check your food and water supplies to make sure that they are still safe to consume.
Contact your utility company to report the outage and any damage to your appliances.
### Safety Tips
Never use a generator indoors, as this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using a generator.
Be careful when boiling water on your stove or over a campfire, as this can lead to burns.
Do not leave candles or other open flames unattended.
