## How to Snake a Kitchen Sink Pipe
A clogged kitchen sink is a common problem that can be easily fixed by snaking the pipe. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to do it:
### Materials You Will Need:
– Sink snake or auger
– Bucket or pan
– Screwdriver (optional)
### Safety Precautions:
– Wear gloves to protect your hands.
– Clear the area around the sink to avoid tripping or getting tangled in the snake.
– If you have any electrical appliances plugged into the sink, unplug them before starting.
### Step 1: Remove the Drain Stopper
– Most sink stoppers are held in place by a small screw. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw and lift the stopper out.
– If your sink has a pop-up stopper, simply pull it up to remove it.
### Step 2: Insert the Snake into the Drain
– Insert the snake into the drain opening and push it down as far as it will go.
– If you encounter any resistance, try rotating the snake back and forth to loosen the clog.
### Step 3: Feed the Snake into the Pipe
– Once the snake has reached the end of the drain, slowly feed it into the pipe.
– Use your other hand to turn the crank on the snake to extend it into the pipe.
### Step 4: Crank the Snake
– Once the snake is fully inserted into the pipe, start cranking it.
– Crank in a clockwise direction to rotate the snake and break up the clog.
### Step 5: Pull the Snake Out
– Once you feel that the clog has been cleared, slowly pull the snake out of the pipe.
– As you pull the snake out, rotate it back and forth to remove any debris that may have attached to it.
### Step 6: Flush the Drain
– Pour a bucket of hot water or use your garbage disposal to flush the drain and remove any remaining debris.
### Step 7: Reinstall the Drain Stopper
– Once the drain is clear, replace the drain stopper and tighten the screw.
### Troubleshooting:
– **The snake won’t go down the pipe:** If the snake won’t go down the pipe, it is likely that the clog is too far down or too large for the snake to reach. In this case, you may need to call a plumber.
– **The snake is stuck in the pipe:** If the snake gets stuck in the pipe, do not try to force it out. Instead, slowly pull it back out and try again. If the snake is still stuck, you may need to call a plumber.
– **The clog is still not cleared:** If the clog is still not cleared after snaking the pipe, you may need to try a chemical drain cleaner. However, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to avoid damaging your pipes.
### Tips:
– If you have a kitchen sink with multiple drains, snake each drain separately.
– Snake your kitchen sink regularly to prevent clogs from forming.
– If you have a garbage disposal, be sure to run it regularly to help grind up food particles and prevent them from clogging your pipes.
