## How to Install a Kitchen Sink
Installing a kitchen sink is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in a few hours. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber.
**Materials**
* New kitchen sink
* Sink strainer
* P-trap
* Supply lines
* Plumber’s putty
* Adjustable wrench
* Basin wrench
* Hacksaw
* Tape measure
**Safety Precautions**
* Turn off the water supply to your sink before beginning work.
* Wear safety glasses when working with power tools.
**Step 1: Remove the Old Sink**
1. Disconnect the water supply lines from the old sink.
2. Loosen the mounting bolts that hold the sink in place.
3. Carefully lift the old sink out of the countertop.
**Step 2: Clean the Countertop**
Once the old sink is removed, clean the countertop thoroughly. Remove any old sealant or adhesive.
**Step 3: Apply Plumber’s Putty**
Roll out a rope of plumber’s putty and place it around the rim of the new sink. Press the putty into place to create a seal.
**Step 4: Set the Sink**
Carefully set the new sink into the countertop. Align the sink with the drain hole and press down firmly to seat the putty.
**Step 5: Tighten the Mounting Bolts**
Tighten the mounting bolts that hold the sink in place. Do not overtighten the bolts.
**Step 6: Install the Strainer**
Place the sink strainer over the drain hole and tighten the locknut.
**Step 7: Connect the P-trap**
Connect the P-trap to the drainpipe. Tighten the nuts by hand, then use an adjustable wrench to snug them up.
**Step 8: Connect the Water Supply Lines**
Connect the water supply lines to the sink faucets. Tighten the nuts by hand, then use an adjustable wrench to snug them up.
**Step 9: Turn on the Water Supply**
Turn on the water supply to your sink. Check for leaks around the sink, faucets, and drain.
**Step 10: Seal the Sink**
Apply a bead of silicone sealant around the rim of the sink where it meets the countertop. Smooth the sealant with a wet finger.
**Tips**
* If you are replacing a sink that is a different size than the old sink, you may need to cut the countertop to accommodate the new sink.
* If you are not comfortable working with plumbing, it is best to hire a licensed plumber to install your new sink.
* Regular maintenance can help to extend the life of your kitchen sink. Clean the sink regularly and check for leaks.
**Troubleshooting**
* If you have a leak around the sink, tighten the mounting bolts or apply more plumber’s putty.
* If you have a leak around the faucets, tighten the nuts that connect the water supply lines.
* If you have a leak around the drain, tighten the nuts that connect the P-trap.
